This article is helpfull towards my research as Christian Bale talks directly about his methods of acting. Although he denies being a method actor it is arguable that he is by the extreme lengths he goes to become the character he is playing. The article opens my research into a debate into his methods of his acting. From my research so far it seems as though he folows the lines of a method actor.

“I’m not having therapy. It’s very limiting if I have to relate every damn thing in somebody else’s life to something that’s happened in mine. At the end of the day, I’m faking it. Pure imagination.

“I never took any classes, I just go, ‘I better wing this one and make it up!’ Everybody talks about the process too much. The interesting thing about a movie is the movie.

“The more I talk about it, the more I’m telling people how to react. I want to talk, but I try not to show too much of myself.'

Research into Christian Bale and his methods of acting

DVD extras
Source 1
American Psycho - Before shooting American Psycho Bale went and hung out with people from wall street to get an idea of what they were like. Also to see the differences between life in the late 80's (around the time setting for American Psycho) and modern day life.

The Machinist (Quotes from Christian Bale)
Christian Bale talking about his weight loss; 'It feels great, it feels like a kind of victory because i kinda just emaciated myself and destroyed myself you know, to the part where kinda just watching myself run is a joke because i just have no leg muscles or anything.'

Christian Bale talking about his acting in general; 'I admire immersion very much, but im not going to take it to stupid lengths, im not going to do it for the sake of it. Its only worth it if its for telling a really good story.'

These quotes will be helpful to my research as the quotes are directly from Christian Bale, it gives an insight into his methods of acting and the lengths he will go to for a film if he thinks its worth it. The quotes i have chosen from the dvd extras show Christian in the middle of his roles, so you see the persona he is currently imitating for his role. It shows him living the life of his character without been filmed. These quotes are a prime example of his methods of acting, even though they are only brief it is still apparent that he will go to extreme lengths to develop into the character he is playing.
